Twin earthquakes measuring magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 struck central and northern Venezuela on June 24, 2026. The death toll has climbed past 1,700, with tens of thousands affected and nearly 60,000 buildings damaged or destroyed, according to estimates from NASA and CNN. Hundreds of aftershocks have followed.

1. India's Response: Operation Amistad

India's response, Operation Amistad, reached Venezuela on June 28. The Indian Army set up a field hospital to provide emergency medical care to survivors. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar said the Field Hospital Unit, along with relief supplies, medicines, and equipment, would strengthen Venezuela's post-earthquake relief efforts.

2. National Doctors' Day Tributes

Marking National Doctors' Day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to the Indian medical professionals serving in Venezuela. Writing on X, he said their tireless work in Operation Amistad shows how medical professionals rise to the occasion whenever society faces a challenge.

EAM Jaishankar echoed the sentiment, thanking medical professionals nationwide and singling out the teams in Venezuela for carrying out what he called challenging relief operations under Operation Amistad.

3. Clinical Impact and Treatment

Among those treated is a 79-year-old survivor rescued from a collapsed building with a fractured leg, complicated by a pre-existing arterial condition that had worsened into a severe ulcer during her time trapped beneath the rubble. The Indian Army's medical team stabilised her fracture, began advanced wound care, and set up a daily follow-up plan.

The Army's official statement described the field hospital as a source of hope, delivering compassionate care to those affected. The Ministry of External Affairs shared visuals of Venezuelan citizens receiving treatment and expressing gratitude to the Indian medical team.

“Operation Amistad — Spanish for “friendship” — has come to represent more than disaster relief. It reflects India's expanding role as an early responder in global crises, in keeping with the idea of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, the world as one family.”

Thousands of miles from home, in tents and makeshift wards, Indian doctors, nurses, and army medical personnel have worked around the clock with portable equipment to treat the injured and support a nation recovering from disaster.
